


The theme for the 2021 Met Gala, which took place at New York City’s Metropolitan Museum of Art on September 13, was In America: A Lexicon Of Fashion. Tonight's gala took on especially more meaning as The Guardian had reported that the Vatican has loaned about 40 pieces for the exhibit which will be available for viewing at the MET's Costume Institute Exhibition from May 10th-October 8th. Heavenly Bodies includes couture garments from designers alongside the relics from the Catholic church which inspired them. The Met Gala was technically founded in 1948, but it took its current form in 1971, so there are literally thousands of looks to chose from, making this list almost impossible to make. Anna Wintour is certainly no stranger when it comes to recognizing the long intertwined history of fashion and religion as evidenced by her controversial (and first) Vogue cover as Editor-In-Chief published in November 1988 when Israeli model, Michaela Bercu, wore a $10,000 Christian LaCroix sweater with a beaded cross over a pair of Guess Jeans. Designed to create a dialogue between fashion and the masterworks of religious art in the museum’s holdings, the show will be presented in a trinity of locations: the Anna Wintour Costume Center. In case you missed it seriously, how could you miss this the theme this year was Heavenly Bodies, a tribute to Andrew Bolton’s brilliant exhibition, which displays fashion inspired by Catholicism, as well as never-before-seen treasures from the Vatican archives. This year's gala played host to one of the most provocative of themes: "Heavenly Bodies: Fashion and the Catholic Imagination" as religion and fashion have shared a long history of collaborations as can be seen through the various works of John Galliano, Christian LaCroix, and Yves Saint Laurent to name only a few.
